Helping Legends Directly

The Hero Initiative would like to introduce you to many of your favorite creators from today and yesterday. Many of these talented folks are available for assignments and commissions as well.

T. Casey Brennan

Terrance Casey Brennan is the author of numerous comic book stories. He was published in the 1970s Warren anthologies Creepy, Eerie, and Vampirella, and in DC Comics' House of Mystery, and the Archie Comics title Red Circle Sorcery. In the 1980s, Casey campaigned to have depictions of smoking in comics banned, which led then-Gov. Bill Clinton of Arkansas to issue a proclamation designating January 1990 as "T. Casey Brennan Month". He currently lives in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Casey is available for writing assignments.

Armando Gil

Armando Gil has served as penciller and/or inker on titles as varied as Ka-Zar, Conan, Micronauts, Spectacular Spider-Man, The 'Nam, and Buckaroo Banzai. He is available for commissions and comic penciling or inking work.

Contact him via phone at 440-342-0502.

Flint Henry

From Grimjack to ManBat, Flint Henry's interpretations of superhero fare have always been a little darker, a little more twisted than most. There's a very good reason for that. He's darker, and more twisted! With an inky-black sense of the macabre and a devilish delight in detail, Flint can create some of the most nightmarish and densely disturbing images imaginable...but all with a sly wink!

Flint is available for penciling and inking assignments, model sheet work, and commissions.

Christopher Ivy

Christopher Ivy, primarily known for his inking, started his career in 1987 on staff at Marvel working for John Romita and Don Perlin in Marvel's Art Corrections Dept. After a short stint in the same year as Joe Rubenstein's inking assistant, he began his own freelance career pencilling, coloring and (mostly) inking for various publishers that included: Marvel (Avengers, Spider-Man, Fantastic Four, and many others), DC (Superman, Aquaman, Flash), Image (Shadowhawk, Supreme and more), Valiant and Dark Horse.

Chris is available for inking, pencilling and coloring assignments, as well as commissions; samples of which can be seen at his ComicArtFans.com gallery: http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryDetail.asp?GCat=32189.

He can be reached directly here.

Jack Katz

Jack Katz is best known as the writer and illustrator of The First Kingdom, arguably the first graphic novel published in the United States. His comics career began in the early 1950s as a penciller for Stan Lee, and continued into the early '70s. At that point, he left mainstream comics to devote twelve years to the First Kingdom project. The entire epic, which spans more than 700 pages and has been out of print for nearly two decades, is currently being reissued in four volumes by Century Comics.

Also currently in print is Anatomy by Jack Katz, Volume 1, a collection of sketches for the advanced figurative art student, illustrating the many ways the dynamic human form can be expressed. Jack is currently hard at work on his next graphic novel, Legacy, and is available for art assignments, art lessons, and commissions.

Bill Mantlo

Bill Mantlo wrote extensively for Marvel Comics in the late 1970s and into the ’80s. In particular, his work graced the pages of Iron Man, Incredible Hulk, and Micronauts. In the early 1990s, Bill was struck by a hit-and-run driver while rollerblading. This accident caused severe head trauma from which Bill is not expected to ever fully recover.

Bill is currently living in an assisted-care environment. An in-depth and fascinating career retrospective book, Mantlo: A Life in Comics, is scheduled to be published in early 2007. Copies can be purchased HERE, with all proceeds from sales of the book going to Bill's caregiver to help ensure that Bill's daily needs can be met.

Bill Messner-Loebs

Bill Messner-Loebs is a major creative force in comics. His most widely-read works include an immensely popular run on Wonder Woman (penciled by Mike Deodato), a long stint on The Flash (penciled by Greg Larocque), and Impulse for DC Comics, and The Maxx (illustrated and co-written by Sam Kieth) for Image. Among his most critically acclaimed works are Epicurus the Sage (illustrated by Sam Kieth), as well as Journey and Journey: War Drums (both self-illustrated).

He also wrote the Jonny Quest comic book published by Comico. His financial situation following years of limited freelance work and the loss of his and his wife's home in the early 2000s was publicized in the local newspaper and comics news sites and message boards on the Internet.

Bill is available for writing and editorial assignments.

Ralph Reese

Ralph Reese started in comics as a Wally Wood protégé, working with Wood on Thunder Agents and Sally Forth. His career took him through stints at Marvel, DC, National Lampoon, Children’s Television Workshop, Continuity Studios, Valiant Comics and more.

Ralph is available for penciling, inking, and commission assignments.

Joe Rubinstein

Josef Rubinstein immigrated to the US from Israel when he was five years old. He didn't speak the language and was immediately drawn to the brightly-colored images of his cousin's stack of comic books. The attraction quickly turned to artistic aspiration, and, at age thirteen, Joe entered New York's famous Art Students League. His art teacher was Arthur Foster, son of Prince Valiant creator Hal Foster.

Around the same time, Joe met his idol, Neal Adams, at a comics convention and inquired about openings at the newly-formed Continuity Associates. In short order, Joe became an assistant both to Adams and to Dick Giordano. At age seventeen, Joe went freelance as an inker and has since worked for every major publisher of comics. Because of his work on The Official Guidebook to the Marvel Universe, Joe holds the Guinness record for having inked more pencillers than any other inker. Joe also does oil and pastel portraits and murals, and has just finished a dozen large illustrations about The Alamo.

Joe is available for inking assignments and commissions.
He can be reached at http://www.joerubinstein.com or www.TheArtistsChoice.com.
